Greece is best known for its beaches, ancient history, and striking landscapes, but have you ever considered it as a destination for animation production? You should!
For us at The Hive, this connection is also personal. We have always loved visiting Greece – we felt at home from the very first time. Over the years, that same feeling kept coming back whenever we met Greek creators at different industry events. There was always a sense that the mindset, the creativity, and the way of working naturally aligned.
That feeling became much more concrete when we met Vassilis C. Karamitsanis & Maria Anestopoulou , Founders of ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, who opened the door for us into the world of Greek animation. Through them, and through our involvement with ASIFA Hellas, we discovered a community full of incredibly talented artists and creators. It confirmed what we had already sensed – this was a place we wanted to build in.
In recent years, Greece has become an increasingly attractive option for studios and producers working across different types of animation projects – it offers a strong combination of financial incentives, flexibility, and growth potential.
Strong Financial Incentives
One of Greece’s biggest advantages is its highly competitive incentive framework. Productions can benefit from a cash rebate of up to 40% on eligible expenses, depending on the production’s financial structure. This incentive applies to animation, VFX, and post-production work, allowing projects to significantly reduce overall costs without compromising on quality. Greece’s incentive framework has been actively developed and promoted in recent years, with key figures such as Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of EKOME, playing an important role in shaping the country’s audiovisual strategy.
For animation in particular, Greece offers flexibility: productions are not required to include physical filming, meaning fully digital pipelines can qualify. This makes it an excellent option for animation.

Cost Efficiency and Growing Talent
Production costs in Greece are generally lower than in many other Western European countries. Combined with the available incentives, this creates a highly efficient environment for both independent creators and larger productions.
At the same time, the local animation ecosystem is steadily growing. With an expanding pool of talent and increasing industry activity – supported by studios such as Da House, White Fox, and Funny Tales – Greece offers both capability and flexibility, along with the opportunity to be part of a developing creative hub.

A Market with Room to Grow
Greece’s animation industry is still growing. For productions, this can mean more flexibility, closer collaboration, and the chance to be part of a scene that’s actively developing.
Greece is also home to ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, one of Europe’s most respected animation events. It’s a place where creators, producers, and studios genuinely connect – something we value deeply as a studio that regularly develops and presents projects in international markets and festivals – The upcoming event in September so get your reels and bathing suits ready!
At The Hive Studio, we’re part of this process as well. Through our Greek branch, we collaborate closely with local artists and partners, building projects together and contributing to the wider animation community with educational classes and training in Toonboom, AI, Photoshop and more! Navigating the Process with the Right Partner
Producing in Greece does come with specific requirements. The application process for incentives can be complex, and projects must work with a Greek production company.
This is where working with us can help. As both an international studio and a Greek company, we’re familiar with the local process and how to navigate it, while keeping things aligned with international partners and production workflows.
A Strategic Base for Co-Productions
As a member of the European Union, Greece provides access to key funding mechanisms such as Creative Europe MEDIA and Eurimages. This opens the door to co-production structures that combine national incentives with European funding and broadcaster partnerships – an essential advantage for financing animated projects across different formats.
If you ask us…
Greece offers a powerful combination of financial benefits, creative flexibility, and strategic opportunity. For animation producers working on a wide range of animation projects, it represents not just a cost-effective solution, but a forward-looking investment in an emerging market.
For us this isn’t theoretical – we are already building, producing, and collaborating within this space.
With the right local partner, Greece is not only viable – it’s a smart and competitive choice!
